Clegg’s Helps Fill That Bus for Crayons2Calculators
Once again this year, Clegg’s joined with numerous other individuals and organizations to support the Crayons2Calculators school supply drive of The Durham Teacher Warehouse Corp. A total of $54,000 in supplies was collected to benefit local students! The mission of Crayons2Calculators is to “serve the educational and creative needs of students in the Durham Public School system by providing free school supplies to classroom teachers.” They collect supplies and then invite Durham teachers into the warehouse to “shop” and outfit their classrooms at no charge.
A recent study by the National School Supply and Equipment Association found that in the 2012-13 school year, 99.5% of public school teachers reported spending their own money on school supplies, instructional materials and/or other classroom materials. Ten percent spent $1,000 or more of their own money in total for the school year—about double the percent as in past studies.
“On behalf of Crayons2Calculators and all the teachers and students we serve, I want to extend our sincere appreciation to Clegg’s Termite & Pest Control for the generosity and community spirit you showed in participating in the Fill That Bus supply drive and helping us surpass what we had thought was going to be a challenging goal!,” says Julie Marshall, Executive Director for Crayons2Calculators. “I wish you could see the pure delight on the faces of the teachers who have come into the store this year to find the shelves weighted down with brand new school supplies for their students. It means so much to them to know that the Durham community is committed to supporting their work to help ALL students achieve success. We thank you for demonstrating your caring and concern in such a tangible way. We are going to have a great school year thanks to you!”
We applaud Crayons2Calculators and its supporters for working toward ensuring that teachers no longer have to pay money from their own pockets in order to do their jobs effectively.
