Do azaleas attract mosquitoes?
One of the common questions we get from our customers who love to garden is: are my azaleas attracting mosquitoes? These bloodsucking pests are attracted to cool, wet places and standing water. If you have a garden with standing water or lots of shade, you may find more mosquitoes there. Azaleas don’t necessarily attract mosquitoes by nature, but if they are large enough to produce this inviting environment, they may be the cause for a swarm of these pests. However, closely managed azaleas should not be the cause for your mosquito issue. Make sure that you do not have standing water around your azaleas; if you do you should change the soil or landscaping to eliminate the water which will reduce the mosquito problem.
Do flowers attract mosquitoes?
There are specific flowers/plants that are more likely to attract mosquitoes as well as to repel them. When selecting the plants for your yard, you will want to stay away from watery plants and plants that produce nectar. For example, try to avoid water lilies, bamboo, taro and papyrus. Instead you may consider citronella, lavender, rosemary, or marigold as these are natural mosquito repellents. If you do happen to have some of the plants that do attract mosquitoes in your garden, it would be beneficial to simply add a few of the others to help counteract the attraction. In general though, standing water and shade is where mosquitoes thrive and will lay their eggs and reproduce. Removing puddles or pots that have collected water will go a long way toward protecting your yard from these pests.
