Homeowners in Durham's newer south-side neighborhoods often assume a slab means safety. It doesn't. Subterranean termites reach slab homes through expansion joints, plumbing and utility penetrations, and settlement cracks — and because there's no crawl space to inspect, the first visible evidence is frequently damage at a baseboard, door frame, or window sill inside finished living space. Pre-construction soil treatments also have a service life, so a house built in the 2000s is not necessarily still protected.
