When is Termite Season?
There technically isn’t a season for termites, as they are active all year long. However, they are more active during the spring and summer months, generally from March to November. They might be less active in the winter, but that doesn’t mean you should prolong treatment if you suspect termites may be feasting on the structure of the building you’re in. We are happy to provide inspections, and free inspections for new customers, so there’s no reason to put treatment off.
How Can I Tell I Have Termites?
These bugs aren’t’ readily visible in your home since they hide out between walls and floors. However, if you see tunnels in your wooden trim (in or outside your home), hollow sounding wood, and tight fitting doors and windows, you might have termites. You can also listen for a quiet clicking sound within your walls to see if you can spot their location. Other hints they might be calling your residence home include peeling paint, termite mud tubes around baseboards, or discolored drywall.
How Did Termites Get Into My Home?
There are two different types of termites: subterranean and drywood. The former live underground, so they will enter your home through cracks or holes in door frames, deck posts, or porch steps. They can even use the holes in concrete blocks to travel through the foundation of your home. Drywood termites, on the other hand, enter through slats and cracks in wood at any level, so that cracked window frame upstairs is the perfect spot for them to make their way inside. Did you know termites can squeeze through an opening that’s as small a 1/32nd of an inch? Make sure your home is protected by getting annual inspections.
How Can I Prevent Termites?
Make sure that your home is protected against moisture by addressing drainage problems. Move lumber away from your home – store it instead in a corner of your yard or in a shed. Trim overgrown shrubs or trees near your property, and last but not least, schedule a yearly inspection to make sure you’re on the right track in keeping your home or office safe from termites. Termites can pop up in new construction too, make sure you’re protected.
